Before
In addition to Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Lewis provides comprehensive orthodontic treatment for children of all ages. Our orthodontic treatment process consists of six steps.
Step one: Initial Exam
During your initial exam, Dr. Lewis will evaluate your dentition and schedule any work that needs to be done before you get your braces. This appointment will require about 30 minutes.
Step two: Records Exam
At your records exam, we will take pictures of your teeth and profile. We will also take a special x-ray, called a cephalometric x-ray, that will be used to determine how much to move your teeth. We will also take a panoramic x-ray and plaster impressions of your teeth. This appointment will last about one hour.
Step three: Orthodontic Consultation
During your consultation appointment, Dr. Lewis will review the proposed treatment plan, the approximate length of time required and all the financial considerations. This appointment will take about 15 minutes.
Step four: Banding Appointment
During your banding appointment, one of our assistants will clean your teeth and Dr. Lewis will put the brackets and wires on. This will be your longest appointment and will last about two hours.
Step five: Monthly Adjustments
Once your braces are on, you will need to come to see Dr. Lewis once a month for adjustments. These appointments typically last 30 minutes and you get to choose a color for your bands. It will take 6 months to two years to complete your treatment.
We reserve a block of time after school each day for orthodontic appointments so you will not need to miss school.
Step six: Retainer Fitting
Once your orthodontic treatment is completed, Dr. Lewis will remove your braces and fit you for a retainer. The retainer will keep your teeth from moving back to their original position. You will need to wear your retainer for a year or more but you only need to see Dr. Lewis every six months at your regular dental checkups.
