Where to go and what to do.

 

Occasionally it is necessary to complete a child’s dental work under general anesthesia. Typically this is because the child is very young (pre-cooperative) and has cavities in several quadrants of the mouth.  Dr. Lewis utilizes Children’s Hospital for these simple outpatient procedures.

 

The Children’s Hospital requires that all children have a pre-operative physical exam to make sure they are healthy before undergoing anesthesia. We have copies of the required form in the office or you can download them from the link at the top of this page.  You must schedule and appointment with your family Doctor with-in 72 hours of the day we go to the Operating Room. Bring a copy of the exam with you.

 

You are headed to the Children’s Hospital in Denver. The map at the bottom of this page indicates Children’s location in the downtown Denver area.  We recommend using the visitor parking in the parking deck on Downing Street.  From the 2^nd floor of the parking deck you can walk across the sky-walk and directly into the hospital day surgery area on the 2^nd floor.  You will need to have 4 quarters to pay for parking. You must report to the 2^nd Floor Day Surgery two hours before your scheduled OR time.

 

Once you arrive, go directly to the admissions desk just past the waiting area on the 2^nd floor.  Make sure you bring your medical insurance card and the pre-operative exam form from your child’s physician with you and fill out all the necessary paperwork at the admitting office.

 

Dr. Lewis will arrive about 30 minutes before the scheduled start time and will meet you in the waiting room.  Once the work is completed, your child will be held in the recovery area until they are fully alert and cleared to leave the hospital.

Pre-Operative Instructions

 

In order to minimize the risk of pulmonary aspiration (vomiting) while under general anesthesia the following food restrictions are strictly applied.

 

· End all solid foods 8 hours prior to scheduled appointment

 

· End all infant formula 6 hours prior

 

· End all breast milk 4 hours prior

 

· End all clear liquids 2 hours prior

 

Financial Considerations

 

There is no additional fee from our office for dental work completed at Children’s hospital.  However, you will be charged by the Hospital for the use of the facility and by the Anesthesiologist for their services.  Typically these charges are paid by your medical insurance and are subject to your standard co-pay and deductible. Our office will help coordinate the medical portion of the billing.

If you do not have medical insurance or your insurance will not cover the procedures, Children’s hospital will finance a portion of the bill.  They also offer reduced pricing for the uninsured.  The current cost is $1800 for the facility and $500 for the Anesthesiologist.

 

We will do our best to provide you with a complete treatment plan and cost estimate before you go to Children’s for the dental portion of the bill.  Usually these estimates are quite accurate. However, our estimate may change for two reasons. We can not guarantee that your insurance company will pay the full amount. Also, we conduct a complete exam in the OR. There may be additional work required to restore your child to full dental health.  Dr. Lewis will complete all work on your child while under general anesthesia.  She will inform you of treatment plan changes immediately following the procedure. If you would like us to submit a pre-treatment estimate to your insurance company we will gladly do so.
